Fathers For Fair Custody supports laws that begin from the equal dignity and importance of safe, capable parents. Research can inform that position, but it does not prove that one schedule is best for every child.

What the evidence suggests

Many observational studies report equal or better average outcomes for children in joint physical custody than sole custody. The studies are heterogeneous, and families often self-select into arrangements. Conflict, safety, resources, parenting quality, child age, and the exact schedule can affect results.

Association is not a guarantee

It is not accurate to promise that shared parenting will prevent depression, delinquency, substance use, school problems, or family conflict. Research describes group averages and limitations; it does not predict an individual child.

A responsible policy position

Courts and lawmakers should treat safe, capable fathers as full parents, use evidence rather than outdated gender assumptions, and retain serious protections for abuse, neglect, coercive control, and other safety concerns. A presumption or starting point must remain rebuttable through fair process and actual evidence.
